Washington, D.C., Metro Police Detective Sergeant Sam Holland needs a big win to salvage her career--and her confidence--after a disastrous investigation. The perfect opportunity arises when Senator John O'Connor is found brutally murdered in his bed, and Sam is assigned to the case.

Matters get complicated when Sam has to team up with Nick Cappuano, O'Connor's friend and chief of staff...and the man Sam had a memorable one-night stand with years earlier. Their sexual chemistry still sizzles, and Sam has to fight to stay focused on the case. Sleeping with a material witness is another mistake she can't afford--especially when the bodies keep piling up.

Peyton's Thoughts:

I am addicted to series. I think it is because I never want to give up the characters I am reading about, so I pick the stories that are focused on them through the entire series - or a series that revolves around a group, so the previous characters always make a comeback in some kind of way. I am just greedy that way! I stumbled upon Marie force on sheer accident on Goodreads looking up new series to read. While this novel was published in 2010, it has 10 novels total and the last one comes out in 2016 - so this is a great time to catch up!

Sam Holland is all that I could ask for as a heroine! She is fierce in so many ways. She is strong willed, determined, loyal and she DOESN'T NEED A MAN TO LIVE. She has survived on her own since her divorce, has a thriving career that she love and she is such a joy to read about. She has a sharp tongue and an amazing sense of humor. I swear I laughed more than I wanted to shake someone, which was starting to be a trend among other books I was reading. While she does, obviously, meet Nick it's not in the mindset that her life would just totally be over if she didn't have a male in it. She is a strong family woman - and in all honesty, one of my favorite female characters to date. She has her own sordid past, as everyone does, but she doesn't let it overcome her and she continues to strive on.

Nick is something else in his own right. He is literally ALPHA, but without being so in such a way that you want to kick him. He's a neat freak & to Sam's non neat-freakness, it becomes hilarious. Nick is thrown into a world he normally would never have entered, but finds out it's exactly the world he wants to be in. Those exact circumstances but him right back in the path of Sam, whom he though he would never see again. Nick has a way of making you laugh, cry and want to strangle him all at the same time. His sense of humor matches Sam's and he grows on you with each and every page.

The story between the two is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I love that this novel.. these novels are not your typical romance at all. While there are some parts that are the same, these novels take you THROUGH a relationship. The ups, downs, in-betweens and even the little skeletons that are hiding in the closet that cannot help but make themselves known. They are tested, re-tested and the put to the test again. Pain, heartbreak, love, betrayal and everything else you can think of all wrapped into one. Force has written a force to be reckoned with when it comes to her Fatal series.

The secondary characters in this novel are so completely charming that I think the books would like their "umpth" without them. Everyone blends so well together, and even the characters that you have complete and utter hatred for, make these books the awesome that they are shaping up to be. Marie Force has written a wonderful romance, with a side of suspense, a dash of sexy page burning scenes and a couple of spoonfuls of laugh out loud humor. You will honestly love every single minute of it. If you are looking for a new series to read - this is a MUST HAVE. I look forward to reading the rest of the novels as well!
